The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
