Trump's Regime of Retribution and Reward

Donald Trump's voracious appetite for revenge has swiftly morphed into a methodical apparatus. Over the twelve months, the president's anger and caprices have taken on the guise of government actions in a manner analogous to earlier authoritarian governments. Justice department officials who fail to comply are promptly dismissed and replaced by loyalists. Critical figures who challenge him face legal action, court proceedings and penalties. Opponents have been categorized under executive orders as “anti-American”, “anti-Christian” and “against free markets”, and warned with legal action as “terrorists”.

Government Institutions Remade

All instance involving prosecution of political opponents and leniency for loyalists demonstrates its own unique qualities. Yet, despite their particular nature, they represent expressions of what has arisen as a calculated technique. Such episodes are anything but isolated. His purge of federal attorneys and FBI agents, alongside his placement of devotees in senior positions, began swiftly, soon developed a pattern, and has now been molded into a structure. Federal prosecutors and the Federal Bureau have been remade into ideological agencies under the president's clear direction to implement his demands. Unfairness has been rendered normal. It constitutes the system of punishment.

Management is preoccupied with targeting the leader's supposed opponents than they are with protecting our public welfare.

Within the Structure

The origin of this system has been exposed in the court filing of multiple previous high-ranking FBI agents submitted in the ninth month in the judicial system in Washington against FBI director a senior appointee and top lawyer a key figure for illegal termination in “a campaign of payback against them for what Defendants judged to be a failure to show adequate devotion”. In the complaint that a former acting director, the former interim leader, details a exchange in which he “publicly confessed the impropriety of his actions”.

Driscoll had attempted to shield law enforcement officers from being dismissed, the lawsuit alleges. The director advised him that “they” – understood by him to be the presidential administration and federal prosecutors – had directed him to dismiss everyone who they determined as having worked on a criminal investigation against Trump. The filing continues: “Patel stated that he had to terminate the people his leaders told him to dismiss, because his capacity to hold his own position was contingent on the ouster of the officials who handled matters involving the President. The director explained that there was no option he or him could do to prevent these or any other dismissals, because ‘the bureau attempted to incarcerate the President in detention and he recalls it clearly.’” After Driscoll informed the director he was disregarding the bureau's own internal rules, he supposedly said “he knew that and he realized the character of the immediate dismissals were likely unlawful”.

Broad Effects

Since Patel's reported admission to the official, the DoJ and the FBI have been dismantled and repurposed for Trump's revenge apparatus. Several of the bureau's top officials were terminated or pushed out in the initial period of the government. Approximately thousands of professional attorneys at DoJ have accepted a “deferred resignation program”. A minimum of seven DoJ lawyers, including those in the New York office, quit in objection over what they considered as political interference in abandoning the legal action against the local official, the mayor, in return for his assistance with the administration's federal agency arrests of foreign nationals. The public integrity section of the justice department, which handles misconduct investigations, has been cut down to minimal staff. The civil rights division has been decimated: 70% of its employees has departed. One-third of senior leaders at the justice department have resigned. The section enforcing conservation statutes has seen departures of 50% its supervisors.

Favors and Sanctions

Regarding the mayor's situation, the acting US attorney for the federal division, the official, quit in protest against what she characterized as the “quid pro quo”. The border official, Trump's “border czar,” showed up as the enforcer with him on Fox News to state: “If he doesn't come through, I will return in NYC.”. Additionally, Emil Bove, previously the senior DoJ official and a ex-lawyer, who brokered the arrangement, was granted an judicial position, a potential stepping stone to the highest court.

His immunity for crimes committed while in government, provided by the remarkable judgment of the Republican majority on the supreme court, thus thwarting his criminal case over the January 6 insurrection and maintaining his political viability for the 2024 election, is the foundation stone on which he depends to shield his stalwarts. With such immunity, he has been empowered to enable misconduct. The consequence of the judicial ruling saturates his administration and the political party completely. The legal case has metastasized. In the words of a past leader's administration lawyer John Dean remarked about the Watergate
